Welcome to Photography Beginner. Hope you find lots of useful resources and information that will help you be a light writer.
Photography literally means to write with light. Photograph is a combination of Greek terms Photo – Light and Graph -Write. As a photographer you are light writing.
How well your photographs turn out will depend on your ability to observe light. Your photos depend on how well you can observe the play of light and shadow. They depend on how well you create the perfect lighting for a portrait. And on your ability to capture sunlight, your ability to capture reflections, your ability to capture textures.
Even professional photographers are in pursuit of the perfect light. Photo dates are set to capture the play of light. Early morning light has called many a photographer out of bed. And cloudy afternoons are on a portrait photographers wish list.
You do not need a camera to take your first lessons in light. Look around you and get to know light. Become aware of how light falls into the room. Or how light reflects off of your child’s hair. See how light casts shadows across a persons face or creates texture of their clothing.
As you go through the day notice the different effects of light. Look for cool light, warm light. Find harsh light and soft light.
As a photography beginner you are on a journey of seeing. You are on the path of light shadow and color. You’re honing your observation skills.
You are the light writer and your camera is the tool you use to capture what you see.
“There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.” Ernst Haas
Open you eyes and see the light. Observe the story and how you want to tell it.
